En 1969, en la Universidad de Stanford (EEUU), el Prof. Phillip Zimbardo realizó un experimento de psicología social. Dejó dos autos abandonados en la calle, dos autos idénticos, la misma marca, modelo y hasta color. Uno lo dejó en el Bronx, por entonces una zona pobre y conflictiva de Nueva York y el otro en Palo Alto, una zona rica y tranquila de California. Dos autos idénticos abandonados, dos barrios con poblaciones muy diferentes y un equipo de especialistas en psicología social estudiando las conductas de la gente en cada sitio.

Resultó que el auto abandonado en el Bronx comenzó a ser vandalizado en pocas horas. Perdió las llantas, el motor, los espejos, el radio, etc. Todo lo aprovechable se lo llevaron, y lo que no lo destruyeron. En cambio el auto abandonado en Palo Alto se mantuvo intacto.

Es común atribuir a la pobreza las causas del delito. Atribución en la que coinciden las posiciones ideológicas más conservadoras, (de derecha y de izquierda). Sin embargo, el experimento en cuestión no finalizó ahí, cuando el auto abandonado en el Bronx ya estaba deshecho y el de Palo Alto llevaba una semana impecable, los investigadores rompieron un vidrio del automóvil de Palo Alto.

El resultado fue que se desató el mismo proceso que en el Bronx, y el robo, la violencia y el vandalismo redujeron el vehículo al mismo estado que el del barrio pobre.

¿Por qué el vidrio roto en el auto abandonado en un vecindario supuestamente seguro es capaz de disparar todo un proceso delictivo?

No se trata de pobreza. Evidentemente es algo que tiene que ver con la psicología humana y con las relaciones sociales. Un vidrio roto en un auto abandonado transmite una idea de deterioro, de desinterés, de despreocupación que va rompiendo códigos de convivencia, como de ausencia de ley, de normas, de reglas, como que vale todo. Cada nuevo ataque que sufre el auto reafirma y multiplica esa idea, hasta que la escalada de actos cada vez peores se vuelve incontenible, desembocando en una violencia irracional.

En experimentos posteriores (James Q. Wilson y George Kelling) desarrollaron la 'teoría de las ventanas rotas', misma que desde un punto de vista criminológico concluye que el delito es mayor en las zonas donde el descuido, la suciedad, el desorden y el maltrato son mayores.

Si se rompe un vidrio de una ventana de un edificio y nadie lo repara, pronto estarán rotos todos los demás. Si una comunidad exhibe signos de deterioro y esto parece no importarle a nadie, entonces allí se generará el delito. Si se cometen 'pequeñas faltas' (estacionarse en lugar prohibido, exceder el límite de velocidad o pasarse una luz roja) y las mismas no son sancionadas, entonces comenzarán faltas mayores y luego delitos cada vez más graves.

Si los parques y otros espacios públicos deteriorados son progresivamente abandonados por la mayoría de la gente (que deja de salir de sus casas por temor a las pandillas), esos mismos espacios abandonados por la gente son progresivamente ocupados por los delincuentes.

La teoría de las ventanas rotas fue aplicada por primera vez a mediados de la década de los 80 en el metro de Nueva York, el cual se había convertido en el punto más peligroso de la ciudad. Se comenzó por combatir las pequeñas transgresiones: graffitis deteriorando el lugar, suciedad de las estaciones, ebriedad entre el público, evasiones del pago del pasaje, pequeños robos y desórdenes. Los resultados fueron evidentes. Comenzando por lo pequeño se logró hacer del metro un lugar seguro.

Posteriormente, en 1994, Rudolph Giuliani, alcalde de Nueva York, basado en la teoría de las ventanas rotas y en la experiencia del metro, impulsó una política de 'tolerancia cero'.
La estrategia consistía en crear comunidades limpias y ordenadas, no permitiendo transgresiones a la ley y a las normas de convivencia urbana.

El resultado práctico fue un enorme abatimiento de todos los índices criminales de la ciudad de Nueva York.

La expresión 'tolerancia cero' suena a una especie de solución autoritaria y represiva, pero su concepto principal es más bien la prevención y promoción de condiciones sociales de seguridad.

No se trata de linchar al delincuente, ni de la prepotencia de la policía, de hecho, respecto de los abusos de autoridad debe también aplicarse la tolerancia cero.

No es tolerancia cero frente a la persona que comete el delito, sino tolerancia cero frente al delito mismo.

Se trata de crear comunidades limpias, ordenadas, respetuosas de la ley y de los códigos básicos de la convivencia social humana.

Me estoy leyendo "Game of Thrones", el libro en el que está basado la serie de televisión con el mismo nombre. El libro engancha incluso más que la serie, los personajes convencen y la historia tiene giros inesperados pero que de alguna manera encajan con el guión.

Godwin's Law should forbid any political debate in Spain. They're so fond of throwing around the N-word that you cannot take it seriously. Except for the Catalans. Everybody knows that Catalonia is different. Or is it?

Our above phrase of the day seems to indicate it is. Catalonia is better, fairer, more European and, above all, a totally lovely place to be. Catalonia is not Spain.

Spain, as seen by another Catalan nationalist activist called Antoni Strubell, is a dark place. "Spain, Europe's last Fascist Refuge?", he asks in a letter to the foreign media. And he answers with a clear yes. Well, that's not a direct yes, it's more a Fox News yes at first, a statement cloaked in questions such as the title or "What in heaven's name is happening in Spain?". Strubell diagnoses a "huge democratic deficit that exists today in Spain" to then finally aswer all the questions with the resounding statement: "The one place [fascism] lives on is in Spain".

There we go: Spain, fascist. Catalonia, democratic. Never mind that the latter is part of the former, this is the widely spread view of Catalan democrats nationalists. It is, as Strubell puts it, "the truth about Spain".

Let's have a look at the true face of Spanish fascism. Is it this? The gentleman who goes ballistic at (02:45), translated below[i] , is Santiago Espot, president of Catalunya Acció, and at the last municipal elections he headed the list of candidates of Solidaritat Catalana per la Independència (SI) in Barcelona. The same coalition Toni Strubell is president of and represents in the Catalan parliament. So Strubell cannot have meant his colleague Mr Espot when he talked of fascism. The fascist must be the other gentleman, who Espot accuses of being a Nazi. That other gentleman is the lawyer and Partido Popular affiliate Juan Carlos Segura, who criticises former Catalan president Lluís Companys for his open rebellion against the state (for instance in 1934, only two years before Franco's uprising), and reminds the viewer that Companys handed out weapons to anarchist groups, who then went on killing sprees.[ii]

Companys is today much venerated, Espot defends the memory of the former president, his face and his voice get a little distorted in the process. Nothing major. The ugly face of Spanish fascism must be found somewhere else. As a matter of fact, the face of Spanish fascism can be found everywhere. Catalans are the new Jews. There's one "documentary" called Spain's Secret Conflictin which this claim is being made. Here are the passages:

(17:12) In the views of Spaniards in general Matthew Tree detects "similarities to a certain kind of anti-semitism". "A lot of the stereotypes, or stereotypical traits, that are put on the Catalans are not too different from the ones that were put on Jews before the Second World War."

(28:00) Josep Maria Solé i Sabaté: "Some of us are very worried in this situation, which sometimes reminds us, in spite of all differences, let's say, of the atmosphere in Vienna in the years 1934 and 1935, right? If you weren't a bit anti-Jewish you weren't altogether Austrian. Today in Spain we are living in a dangerous situation, in which if you aren't a bit anti-Catalan, you're not altogether Spanish, let's say."[iii]

At (26:55) Matthew Tree puts a great deal of blame on the Spanish press, in particular on Federico Jiménez Losantos: "It's very similar, and I don't want to make comparisons, but from what I've read it's very similar to the kind of broadcasting that was going on in Yugoslavia ten years... for ten years leading up to the civil war. And the Bosnian war, I mean. And for me it's quite frightening, you know. I hear that man on the radio, and more than upset me he frightens me."[iv]

An Englishman cannot be wrong! Spain is intrinsically fascist. Catalans are the victims. The Spanish press is full of hatemongers.

Now that we've seen what Catalan nationalists say, let's get back to reality. Let's start again with Strubell and his criticism of Germany, pardon, Spain, where democracy arrived about 30 years later than in Germany. So like in the Germany of the 50s, 60s and 70s, today in thirty years later Spain many things still need to be improved. Or let's consider the US. How long did it take until "all men are created equal" was finally implemented? Spain is not ideal, but it's not different either.

Strubell is hugely over the top, but he is an honourable man, one of Catalonia's most respected political activists. Let's see what more he has to say.

When science journalist Eduard Punset was awarded the Creu de Sant Jordi earlier this year he made an acceptance speech that voiced criticism of Catalan society, which he found to be showing signs of "closing itself off from the world" with the risk of "asphyxiating itself" culturally.Strubell's take on this is the following: "I believe that if someone who has just received such high honours commits such a verbal misstep, he should see his prize withdrawn ipso facto because of his bad education and lack of respect towards his nation."

Some lines further on Strubell shouts out: "This gentleman doesn't even know how to say one phrase in Catalan without messing with the language!"

To deny someone a public prize on the grounds of his political opinion not being in line with the established national cause is nationalism gone into extreme. To vilify this person for individual traits that have nothing to do with his political views goes a step further. This now is more than just calling for political conformity. It is the demand for uniformity in all aspects of life so as to make the other acceptable as a fellow citizen countryman and a human being. In the Catalan context, bashing someone for his bad Catalan is akin to attacking people for physical features such as the shape of their nose or the colour of their skin in other societies. Such an attitude should have no place in political discourse, and when nevertheless it is used, it must be called racism, even though the references here are cultural and not genetic.[v] (What makes Strubell's accusations so outworldish is the fact that Punset speaks Spanish with a noticeable Catalan accent.)

To top it all off, Strubell calls Punset by the Spanish equivalent of his name. Eduard becomes Eduardo. What little of Punset as a person could have remained in the eyes of Strubell is done away with already at the very start by identifying him as part of the enemy nation. By spanifyingPunset. The attack could not be more personal, more personally degrading in its intentions.

Strubell's whole approach, the demand for political as well as for racial uniformity, reveals nothing less than a proto-fascist stance. And I do not call it outright fascism because the punishmentdemanded for Punset has not been made extensive to all spheres of social interaction. However, Strubell has entered a logic in which the next steps have historically proven to be relatively minor.

A university teacher, journalist, long-time political activist turned member of the parliament of Catalonia and self-styled writer should be aware of such slippery terrain. But neither has he since amended his words nor has anybody in Catalan nationalist circles critised him for them. Strubell remains a well-respected member of Catalan society, and that is what makes the matter grave.

In dubio pro reo -and here goes another mitigating factor that forbids me to speak of more than a proto-fascist attitude- is the whole Spanish debate culture. There hardly is any. We have to see Strubell's words in this context. Another consequence of the absence of a valid debate culture is, as I said at the beginning, that the N-word is used so easily by many on all sides that it loses much of its seriousness. However, let's not forget that by the same lack of seriousness Spaniards have shown to be able to get into civil war. The matter is, therefore, an important one.

Strubell's recent verbal radicalisation has come as no surprise to those who have been following his writings. He speaks systematically from the nation first angle. There also seems to be someadmiration for former terrorists that goes back on a more generalised feeling among Catalan pro-independence advocates. Terrorism might be seen as bad, but some cannot avoid a certain sympathy with the devil.

Josep-Lluís Carod-Rovira, for a long time one of the figureheads of the secessionst movement in Catalonia, made that very clear already years ago: "(...) if you want to attack Spain, first of all have a look at the map." This was Carod's reaction to a deadly ETA bombing in Vic, Catalonia, which he saw mainly as "a torpedo against the waterline of Catalan independentism".[vi] Such extremism gets rewarded in Catalonia: Carod went on to become the leader of Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC, the party of Companys), which later joined the Catalan government. Then, in early 2004, Carod had another meeting with ETA, this time in Perpignan. His aim was to convince ETA, not to lay down the arms, but to stop attacking in Catalonia.[vii] He was widely criticised for it, had to apologise, lost his post in the Catalan government for some time, but came back afterwards to make it to vice-president of the regional government. Political life in Catalonia went on as if nothing had happened. Just a hickup. But in the rest of Spain they haven't forgotten this.

Just a few days ago, Carod rehashed his "not in Catalonia" argument. "The Spaniards have every right in the world to be outraged. But if they want to do so, as Spaniards, it would be best if they didn't get the map wrong [emphasis added] and demonstrated, showed their outrage, pissed, painted, shouted and insulted where it is due: in their country."

The movement of the outraged or Indignados has Catalan secessionists quite a bit against the wall. It could compete with their recipe of creating a new and propsperous state for the hearts and minds of all those many down by economic crisis. Ideological competition is getting fierce, hence the recurrent complaint that the Indignados are not Catalan enough. Alfons López Tena, Strubell's fellow partyman, even refused to respond in Spanish in a press conference after the siege of the Catalan parliament on June 15 by parts of the Indignados. They were all insulting the MPs in Spanish, Tena said, so he could not use the same language, which is legally co-offical in Catalonia and the mother tongue of more than half of all Catalans. As a regional MP, López Tena is one of the highest representatives of the law and of Catalan society.

So what have we come to, after starting with the claims that Spain is undemocratic, totalitarian and fascist while Catalonia is an oasis of democracy? We can conclude that the same people who make such claims adopt proto-fascist discourse and, as in the case of Santiago Espot, manners, that their proclaimed peacefulness is doubtful to say the least and that their law-abiding and democratic attitude is a farce.

Now let's have another look at Spain's Secret Conflict, which in a short time has gone viral among Catalan pro-independence activists. This is no journalistic work in any possible way. Its presenter, Gary Gibson, is no media person.[viii] Gibson is an English teacher who lives in Mataró. The film's aim is not to inform but to disinform abroad, to "internationalise the Catalan conflict".

Spain's Secret Conflict was not made by the BBC, or any other news organisation for that matter. It was commissioned by a pro-independence platform called Sobirania i Progrés (Sovereignty and Progress). This is quite a crucial piece of information that has been left out of the film's credit roll. Additionally, prominent members of this platform also have prominent roles in the film, without being identified as such. One would think that the public has a right to this information.

Among the founding members of Sobirania i Progrés is the first interviewee, MEP Oriol Junqueras, who at (02:11) boldly claims: "We Catalans want our own state". Junquera's party (ERC) on a sunny day represents some 15% of the Catalans. Junqueras has recently been tipped to become president of ERC, after its 2010 election debacle (7%). Another founding member of Sobirania i Progrés is Miquel Strubell, brother of our friend Toni Strubell.

First-day signers of the manifesto of Sobirania i Progrés include Toni Strubell himself, Matthew Tree, who appears as a kind of foreign star witness in Spain's Secret Conflict, and Víctor Alexandre, the gentleman who made our phrase of the day above. As would have been expected, Josep-Lluís Carod-Rovira and his brother Apel.les are also members of Sobirania i Progrés.

Alfons López Tena, presented plainly as "a leading legal expert" (36:09), isn't on the list of Sobirania i Progrés. Neither was he yet a regional MP at the time of the interview, but he had already created the Cercle d'Estudis Sobiranistes (in 2007) together with Héctor López Bofill, another founding member of Sobirania i Progrés (in 2006). If Mr Tree were right about Catalans being treated like the Jews,[ix] López Tena would never have been member of the CGPJ. Nor would Joan Rosell (17:34) have been elected to head the CEOE ("the bosses' union", as Gibson puts it) in 2010.[x]

Spain's Secret Conflict is the opposite of journalism. It is a well-filmed, well-edited and very well scripted piece of political propaganda. There would have been little difference if Matthew Tree and others had interviewed themselves. Tree also doubles as the film's translator, a position that allows him not only to charge money, but also to raise the tone another notch, like when he translates "reactiva" with "reactionary" at (33:44).[xi]

And that's not even all. Sobirania i Progrés's Elisenda Paluzie, whose tweet we linked to above, does not appear herself in the film she had commissioned and that gravitates around thereferendum on independence. However, right when her film was shot Paluzie was one of the organisers of that referendum,[xii] while López Tena was driving it in the town of Osona, likely at the very time Mr Gibson interviewed him as "a leading legal expert". Josep Maria Solé i Sabaté, introduced in the film (05:13) as "one of Catalonia's best known historians", was also a prominent supporter of Paluzie's referendum, and so were the other interviewees Matthew Tree and Josep-Lluís Carod-Rovira. As to the last Catalan interviewee to be named (with the exception of Joan Rosell), the former long-time president Jordi Pujol has voted for the independence of Catalonia. Most of these facts were know at the time the film was made, but they go unmentioned by Mr Gibson.

Elisenda Paluzie, a prominent member of ERC and professor of Economics, is on record to haverecently said about the net fiscal transfer (also called "fiscal deficit", or more bluntly "plundering") from Catalonia to the central government: "We have to use the unfair treatment that Catalonia receives to make the sovereignist [pro-independence] awareness grow".[xiii] The amount of the fiscal deficit is one of the most important political issues today in Catalonia, and one of the strong points in Paluzie's film. Paluzie, however, does not want the problem solved. She takes it as a welcomed argument for independence, especially in times of economic crisis. Economic crises have that unholy tendency to boost extremist positions.

The president of Catalonia, Artur Mas (CiU), says he wants to get the fiscal deficit solved not by limiting it, but by demanding the same exceptional treatment the Basque Country and Navarre get. This aim is not only highly unlikely to materialise, the demand itself is in stark contrast to another, more fundamental one: that the historical differences within Spain be respected. Catalan politicians and opinion makers have repeatedly been up in arms whenever other, "non-historical" Autonomous Communities tried to copy the Catalan model in order to attain similar rights and privileges. A perceived lack of respect is at the very core of all the grievances, real or imagined, Catalans have with "the Spanish", and from here a straight line leads up to the accusations of fascism that were the starting point of this text.

Mas now wants to copy Euskadi. Moreover, Mas's proposal includes a political threat. Or rather it's blackmail: should his demands not be met by Madrid he is willing to lead Catalonia into independence. Having created these false alternatives, it looks like a win-win situation for Mr Mas, who has voted for independence in Paluzie's referendum (and so have several of his ministers) and has officially declared that his ultimate aim is to "complete nation-building" ("completar la construcció nacional", in Catalan).

It is within the logic of such double discourse that false pretenses abound. Paluzie's film is a classic example of both. It pretends to be about the "right to decide" of "the nation of Catalonia". It is, in fact, about something much more sinister.

Sobirania i Progrés's manifesto, co-written by Paluzie, doesn't mention the name of Catalonia even once, instead it consistently speaks of the Catalan Lands. From this angle, both Paluzie's referendum and her film are two parts of the same dialectical Trojan Horse.

It is, both politically and legally, much easier to argue for the self-determination of a well defined territory, in this case of Catalonia proper, than for the secession of all the territories where Catalan is spoken. The former can (and often is explicitly taken to) relate to acceptable precedents such as Slovenia, the latter is all too reminiscient of "Gde je srpski grob, tu je i Srbija"-"Where there is a Serb grave, there is also Serbia". Hence it cannot be sold to an international audience and has no place in Paluzie's propaganda film. The Balkan analogy ends here. Nobody threatens to achieve the unification of the Catalan Lands by violent means. On the other hand, nobody wanted to build the Berlin Wall, either.

A clearer distinction between the different, yet much related, concepts of nationalism, Pan-Catalanism, secessionism etc. in all their different shades shall be made in a following text, that will also try to evaluate what real political influence each current has. One thing should be clear already, if things were to go according to the will of most political activists mentioned here, an independent Catalonia would claim huge territories from the then neighbouring states of Spain, France, Italy and maybe the whole of Andorra. This is their declared will. They all come together in and around Sobirania i Progrés's manifesto, its referendum and its film, and while they claim the wildest things about that devilish Spain, they reveal their own attitudes, methods and intentions all too readily. It just takes a bit of piecing-together.

Even extremists do have to reveal their true intentions in order to achieve the highest degree of domestic political cohesion. Without such cohesion and an absolute commitment to the goal no major change is possible. And only by revealing even the dark sides of their intentions their political leaders can ultimately turn a community of victims into a community of perpetrators.

There is no good Catalan today who would say that he or she is Spanish. The false dichotomy that opposes Catalonia to Spain is the leitmotif of local secessionist discourse, it is present in many of the quotes we have seen here, and it is to be understood as a conflict that demands a very personal choice of everybody, especially of each single one of those many in Catalonia who still define themselves as both Catalan and Spanish.[xiv]

The risk of being perceived as dangerous abroad seems to be mitigated by a general good-will attitude of the foreign audience, an optimism that grows the further away or less known the troublespot is.

It is more worrying for those who have the gun right to their head. When the leader of a new party that has set out to work for "the regeneration of political life" says "we'll bump off anybody who gets in our way, we'll kick their asses" he might be perceived as a bit threatening, even though the bumping-off part was not meant literally. Neither was the gun analogy, yet.[xv]

"(...) totalitarian, arrogant and despotic (...)". As well as undemocratic, misleading, manipulating, lying, insulting, deceiving, distorting, disinforming, vilifying, slandering, vile and perfidious. And if that general climate hasn't been enough to discourage any dissent, there are quite some hotheadsready to disrupt meetings of opponents in a way nobody wanted to see again. Which brings us back to the beginning and Toni Strubell's letter to the foreign media. What in heaven's name is happening in Catalonia...

Let me leave you with another quote: "10.000 organised people are more powerful than one million, we are ready to create this power (...). Hèctor López Bofill, Sobirania i Progrés.

Coda: Sobirania i Progrés, so eager to "internationalise the process towards sovereignty", hasn't cared to publish their website in any language other than Catalan. Toni Strubell, who is half English-half Catalan, only writes in Catalan on his site.

Maybe they know that they mustn't put all their thoughts directly to an international audience. That certainly denotes a lack of understanding how the Web works.

At this point the TV show's goosebump-resistant presenter interrupts to criticise not Espot but Segura, demanding him to be respectful, and calls on the viewers to call in if they are in disagreement with Segura. Democracy in the making: let the angry mob take over. At this point Segura actually looks a bit worried. Mission accomplished.

[ii] The main "acció" of Mr Espot's Catalunya Acció association has for years been to (anonymously) denounce all those shopkeepers who were using mainly Spanish in their written communications, instead of Catalan. This, too, is remindful of the core fascist tactics of using the law to abolish the law, i.e. the whole legal framework set by the constitution. Espot is using a Catalan law in order to abolish the Spanish Constitution.

It is sad -as usual- to confirm how far we are from a balanced and thoughtful society.

We are likely to expect more of what this image shows, 4 years of sun, tourism and constructions. Going back to our roots and preparing the next crisis of 2020.

El hombre-masa tiene varios rasgos: libre expansión de sus deseos vitales y una radical ingratitud hacia cuanto ha hecho posible la facilidad de su existencia. Es decir, sólo le preocupa su bienestar y al mismo tiempo es insolidario con las causas de ese bienestar. Uno y otro rasgo componen la psicología del niño mimado. El hombre-masa es el niño mimado de la historia.El hombre-masa es incapaz de otro esfuerzo que el estrictamente impuesto como reacción a una necesidad externa. Hace ya mucho que no escribo nada en éste blog. Voy a dedicar unos minutos ha escribir sobre algo que me deprime profundamente. España no tiene futuro.
Es ahora, cuando se acercan las elecciones, que uno se da cuenta de lo mal que estamos. No voy a recomendar a nadie a quién votar, pero no entiendo como aún se defiende a los dos únicos partidos (PP y PSOE) que han gobernado el país.
¿Qué credibilidad tiene alguien que promete cosas que ha rechazado en el Congreso en estos años?

Y sin embargo parece que la gente no tiene memoria. Ya se han olvidado de los innumerables casos de corrupción que se han ido sumando estos años. Y eso, solamente es la punta del iceberg de mierda, a saber que cosas no nos han contado.

Pero la gente les vota. La gente decide: "Dame mierda", y la tiene. Por supuesto no todos los españoles son iguales. La única manera y el único momento en el que podemos decir algo, en el que podemos cambiar algo es cuando hay elecciones. Es en esos momentos cuando los corruptos tiemblan (?) e intentan cuidar su imagen. Es ahora, durante un sólo día, tenemos el poder de quitarnos la mierda de encima. Pero la gente quiere mierda.

No todas las personas son iguales, y los españoles tampoco son excepción a esa regla. España tiene 47 millones de personas, de las cuales 41.2 son españoles. De esos, 9.2 millones son menores de 19, 6.1 millones están entre los 19 y los 29, 10.4 millones de 30 a 50 años, 5.7 millones de 50 a 59 años y 10.2 millones son mayores de 60. Por cierto que sorprende ver la cantidad de gente mayor que tiene el pais. Ellos se preocupan de sus pensiones y de la sanidad. Los niños no pueden votar, luego no importan así está la educación, que da pena. Una minoría de gente ha vivido con Internet (de 19 a 29) y luego la mitad de gente que trabaja (es un decir).

Con esta mezcla de gente uno esperaría que hubiese muchas distintas inquietudes, y distintas visiones para el país, sin embargo parece que todo se reduce a dos. ¿Por qué ocurre esto? Pues no lo sé. Lo único que se me ocurre es que España es un país de imbéciles integrales. Porque no entiendo, y no puedo entender que sigamos con que si PP o PSOE a estas alturas joder. Entiendo que a los más mayores aún les vaya eso, por lo de las heridas de la guerra civil. No entiendo cómo la gente joven aún sigue también. Siempre he imaginado a los niños de izquierdas con camisetas del Che y palestinas, llamando fascista a cualquiera que no vota PSOE. Los niños de derecha los imagino con ropa de marca, coche de papá y escuela privada. Sendos niños tienen una imagen irreal del mundo actual y son ya descerebrados sin criterio. Por supuesto que por suerte no todos son así ni mucho menos. Aunque con la educación que tenemos es cuestión de tiempo. Estas astillas vienen de los palos que les dieron los padres, tan ignorantes como los hijos y que de alguna manera siguen las consignas de "rojo" o "facha" respectivamente.

Éste es el panorama veleta y sin criterio que se presenta para las próximas elecciones. En un país de ignorantes que carece de las más mínimas de las más mínimas reglas democráticas como las listas abiertas o los referendums. En el fondo, no son siquiera esas carencias las que me deprimen y me hacen pensar que España está perdida, sino los españoles. La gente, cuando habla, cuando expresa sus decisiones políticas y cuando las defiende. Es entonces cuando se ven los estragos que la propaganda a hecho en España.

Hace ocho años predije que Zapatero ganaría y ganó, nunca sabremos con certeza si los atentados tuvieron algo que ver. Hace cuatro se veía que volvería a ganar, ya que el candidato del PP (cómo si no hubiera otros) era un memo. Bueno, no tan memo, porque sabía que la economía se iba a pique y que cuatro años después, en éste mes, podría ganar...

Y en esas estamos, un memo contra otro memo. Un político que promete todo lo que no ha propuesto en ocho años y otro que promete lo que no ha querido hacer mientras gobernaba. Esto es lo que hay. Y los más memos de todos, los memos superiores, los más obtusos, los bobos, simples y analfabetos?

Summary
This regulation is aimed at ensuring passengers' protection in case of denied bording, cancellation or long delays.

Point 10: Passengers denied boarding against their will should be able either to cancel their flights, with reimbursement of their tickets, or to continue them under satisfactory conditions, and should be adequately cared for while awaiting a later flight.

Point 12: Air carriers should compensate passengers if they fail to do this, except when the cancellation occurs in extraordinary circumstances which could not have been avoided even if all reasonable measures had been taken.

Point 13: Passengers whose flights are cancelled should be able either to obtain reimbursement of their tickets or to obtain re-routing under satisfactory conditions, and should be adequately cared for while awaiting a later flight.

Applies to airports in EU or to flights to EU.
It applies both, if you have been on a cancelled flight and if you have been moved from one flight to another.

It also specifies each steps to follow in case of:
4. Denied Boarding: Immediately compensate passengers and assist them(See 7).
5. Cancellation: Assitance, rerouting and compensation (unless informed weeks in advance or extreme circumstances like weather)
6. Delay: more than 2 hours is already delay, passengers should receive assistance and compensation.
7. Compensation: 250Euros if distance is less than 1500km, 400Euros if between 1500 and 3500km, 600 rest. If rerouting is in less than 2 hours compensation can be just 50%.
9. Care: meals, refreshments, hotel, 2 calls, emails...
16. Enforcement: There is a list of the regulatory bodies at http://apr.europa.eu with emails, telephones, etc.

Pregunta del millón: por qué las gafas graduadas son tan caras?

Soy miope de toda la vida, no tengo muchas dioptrías pero lo suficiente como para que ir sin lentillas o gafas sea una incomodidad. Si unas gafas se hacen en serie (no a mano), con materiales relativamente simples (plástico/cristal y metal) y en poca cantidad, se pueden guardar, apilar y no pasan de moda (no, no pasan de moda)... por qué diablos son tan caras? Y decir que son complejas o delicadas no me vale como excusa, un teléfono móvil es infinitamente más complejo y preciso y sin embargo te vale mucho menos que unas gafas. De verdad que no lo entiendo.

De cualqueir modo, llevo una semana mirando donde comprar gafas y la verdad es que es frustrante, más baratas (y feas) son por 89€, las bonitas son por 300€.

Mirando por Internet se habla de Zenni Optical, que las vende baratas y, según dicen, en buenas condiciones. El proceso para comprarlas es bastante simple, necesitas consultar con tu oculista cuales son tus dioptrías, la distancia pupilar y otros detalles, así como asegurarte de que compras unas gafas con las medidas correctas. El pago es con tarjeta y el coste de las gafas que he pedido (montura + cristal + envío) es de 30€. El precio asusta de lo barato que es, pero prefiero tirar 30 euros a pagar 300, por lo que me arriesgo contento.

Iré escribiendo mis opiniones sobre el servicio, el producto y sus defectos o virtudes.

Here in Finland, Exchange students have to pay more for accommodation than other students (2010), at least with HOAS. For instance:

14 square meter room on Jämeräntaival 10 or 11, furniture included.

.- Price for a "normal" student is 214 € (644/3) plus a 200 € deposit.

.- Price for an exchange student is 389 € plus a 500 € deposit.

The reason they say is:

"It's because there are furnitures and to exchange student apartments the maintenance serving is wider than normal student apartments."

All apartments are furnished, for everyone. Even if they are not, you can nicely furnish a whole room for 250 € buying in IKEA. There are places in Otaniemi where you can get furniture for free!!

According to HOAS, maintenance services includes the following:

"Service includes things like changing light bulbs/fuses, changing batteries to fire alarms, maintaining radiators and temperature of the apartment."

So they are charging you twice the prize for changing a lightbulb!!!

Seriously, this is preposterous. If you know how to change a light-bulb do not accept any offer like this because it is not normal, ask other students. The average Aalto student pays 200-300 for a room, and 200 for deposit. All rooms include, heating, electricity and broadband connection.

Moreover, if you carefully read the HOAS FAQ for Exchange students you will see that if you have a fixed-time agreement, let's say one year, you cannot terminate it!!. Copy-pasted from HOAS FAQ:

"I want to terminate my tenancy agreement?
You have a fixed time contract with Hoas and it cannot be terminated. "

I mean, is that even legal??
I just hope that this helps prospective students if they happen to google for this information.

Note: At Aalto (previously named TKK) you have two main housing agencies, HOAS (private) and TKY (regulated by the Student Union). If you are a prospective student, trust me and apply for TKY asap.

Aaaargh where did Windows go? Fixing grub rescue prompt

So, you have been messing with your computer and with linux. Now when you boot you get the prompt:

And you can not access your windows 7 partition, shit... that sucks man.

To fix it you need a windows 7 recovery CD/USB. Follow these steps once you have it:

1. Put the Windows Vista installation disc in the disc drive, and then start the computer.
2. Press a key when you are prompted.
3. Select a language, a time, a currency, a keyboard or an input method, and then click Next.
4. Click Repair your computer.
5. Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next.
6. In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Command Prompt.
7. type bootrec /FixMbr
8. Reboot.

La bolsa se hunde (de nuevo). Comento un post leído en Invertia, fatalismo?, futurismo? ... el tiempo lo dirá.

Últimamente no participo y tengo la certeza que nos vamos a hundir y que vamos a entrar en bancarrota, hacía 125 años que el país no entraba en bancarrota.

Hoy Londres estaba cerrado, pero preveo que mañana nos van a bregar bien y que va a ser un efecto en cadena, un trader comenzará otros le seguirán. Son todos amigos y toman sus pintas en el Pub a eso de las cinco de la tarde, y uno empezará a hablar y otro se apuntará al día siguiente. Tenemos todas las papeletas para pensar que nuestra salida del la situación es imposible.

Nos van a hundir y no veo salvación. Decir que hay esperanzas es engañar a la gente. A la gente hay que decirla que vivirá mucho peor, que carecerá de lo imprescindible para curar su salud, para comer y para vestirse, que recortarán sueldos, que retrocederán los derechos sociales hasta el momento anterior a que se istauraran, que desaparecerán las pagas extras y que mucha gente conocerá el hambre.

Esta es la absoluta realidad, en un panorama donde las personas no producen ni bienes ni servicios a precios competitivos, donde los funcionarios superan el 20%, el despilfarro de las CCAA es brutal, donde la deuda privada supera el 170% del PIB, es decir los Bancos deben palas de dinero, donde las empresas españolas no podrán financiarse por el diferencial de Spreads como consecuencia del riesgo de quiebra del reino de España, donde el paro lo sufren el 20% de la población, y sobre todo donde hay un Gobierno que ha sido votado por una mayoria de personas, y esto es lo acojonante, la cantidad de personas que han votado a este tipo después de haber celebrado unas elecciones donde la recesión era ya evidente.

Si la gente ha preferido votar a un señor cuyo referente Felipe Gonzálezz nos llevó al 24% de paro , es que algo funciona muy mal en España. Alguien además que se cree un iluminado, y que ha mentido sobre la llegada de la crisis y no ha implantando una sóla medida a tiempo.

Es imposible que alguien pueda pensar que sin producir los suficientes bienes de consumo apreciados fuera, donde casi toda la industria y riqueza creada descansa sobre la base del pelotazo y el timo del ladrillo al prójimo, y además con un gobierno tan incompetente, empresarios acomodados, comunidades autónomas incapaces de controlar el gasto y sindicatos vendidos, es imposible digo, que nadie en el extranjero pueda pensar que España es capaz de salir de ésta.

Mañana con la City abierta nos van a bregar bien, pero bien, y nos vamos a meter en una espiral de la que no saldremos, salvo quitando muchísimos derechos sociales, y empobreciendo al amado votante en al menos un 30% de su actual status social.

Para acabar un comentario en Invertia de un gran forero que ilustra muy bien en manos de quiénes estamos. Ojito a lo que ha llegado al poder:

Hoy he comprado una lechuga, solamente una. Es por eso que me he fijado en el precio, que en Estocolmo es de 35 coronas o lo que es lo mismo, 3,5 Euros. Me ha parecido un precio desorbitado por un producto que al fin y al cabo no es manipulado ni elaborado ni nada... no olvidemos que un Cheeseburger del McDonalds vale 1 euro. Indignado he llegado a casa y me he fijado que la lechuga era de España, producido por Pascual Hermanos S.A. , mirando un poco en Internet he visto lo que pagan a los agricultores que es solamente 1 céntimo por lechuga (y para ellos 10 céntimos por lechuga ya estaría muy bien).

I was watching the final season of "The Sopranos" in streaming in Megavideo (amazing ending by the way). I couldn't find the original version in english so I watched the dubbed version in spanish.

In the episode 21 there is a scene in which they are having drinks at home. The daughter of the mafia boss Tony Soprano is going to finish law school and they were talking of paying her 1700 which I assume is euros per month (27336$ per year). It seemed an awfully politically correct salary for the awe that caused to the parents. I was curious so I checked the original subtitles:

Fritz Haber

Fritz Haber (1868-1934) fue un químico alemán galardonado con el Premio nobel de Química del año 1918. El premio se lo dieron por inventar un proceso (El proceso Haber-Bosch) por el cual se podía fabricar nitrógeno de manera sintética (hasta entonces, el mayor exportador era Chile). El nitrógeno es fundamental para la vida, y se usa en diferentes productos químicos nitrogenados (fertilizantes, explosivos y materias primas químicas).

Qué implicaría esto? Pues implicó que las granjas pudiesen producir mucho más de lo que antes podían, ya que se incrementaba la cantidad de nitrógeno en el suelo de manera artificial. En la actualidad se produzcan 100 millones de toneladas de fertilizante de nitrógeno al año. Responsables por el sustento de más de un tercio de la población mundial.

Pero no nos desviemos, Fritz Haber también participó en la primera guerra mundial organizando el departamenteo de guerra química alemán. Haber consiguió sintetizar los primeros gases venenosos: amonia y luego clorina. Su mujer, Clara Immerwahr, se metió un tiro con la pistola de él al no poder soportarlo. Haber se fue a probar el gas al dia siguiente de su muerte.

Más tarde desarrolló otro gas, el Zyklon B, como un insecticida. Lo irónico del asunto es que él era judió y tuvo que emigrar en la Segunda Guerra Mundial, y su gas se usó para matar judios en los campos de exterminio.

Es interesante reflexionar acerca de distintos puntos, responsabilidades, moral y ética... Cómo se le puede exigir responsabilidad moral a un gobierno? Cómo se le puede exigir a un científico? En la guerra... vale todo? Está perdiendo el ser humano su humanidad

Monsanto en España

Todo el mundo debería haber visto ya Food Inc, después de verla se me ocurrió mirar acerca de Monsanto y los transgénicos (semillas patentadas cuyo ADN se ha modificado) en la wikipedia:

"En Europa, los alimentos transgénicos, principal actividad actual de Monsanto, encuentran gran resistencia entre la población y los agricultores, que no consideran probada su seguridad para la salud humana.

El cultivo de dichos alimentos transgénicos es practicamente inexistente en el territorio de la Unión Europea con la única excepción de España y Rumania."

Es curioso que España si use este tipo de productos, sobre todo siendo uno de los mayores productores a nivel europeo. Aún más curioso que no se hable de ello en España.

En la página de Monsanto España, http://www.monsanto.es tienen todo un FAQ para tratar de mejorar la opinión que la gente tiene de ellos, tratando de eliminar lo que ellos llaman mitos (Dime lo que piensas y te diré lo que padeces). Algo me dice que sería mejor llamarlas verdades, pongo unas cuantas:

Con tanto problema que hay hoy en dia con la SGAE, con los músicos, y con los problemas que habrá en el futuro con los escritores y las editoriales, no entiendo como no se usa la solución más lógica y satisfactoria para ambas partes (salvo editoriales y SGAE claro).

Que el ministerio de cultura haga una web que permita a los escritores/músicos subir su libro/canción en formato electrónico para que se pudiera comprar por 3/0.5 euros y cuyo beneficio sea enteramente para el autor. Se podría hacer tipo Apple Music Store o Amazon, pero todo junto y más cutre, al fin y al cabo lo haría el ministerio, el caso es que funcionase.

De este modo se difunde la cultura de manera quasi-gratuita, los autores dependen de sus obras (cosa que no ocurre hoy en dia con SGAE y editoriales), el presupuesto (que sería poco el necesario) se gasta en algo útil por una vez y no en comisiones y mierdas por el estilo.

Venga señores! Esto hay que ponerlo en marcha ya!

Recapitulando, quería volar de Estocolmo a Milán. Me cancelaron el vuelo, tuve que comprar otro billete porque la aerolínea (Easyjet) no nos daba ninguna alternativa. El segundo vuelo era Estocolmo-Frankfurt-Milán, cuando llegué a Frankfurt el vuelo estaba cancelado también, así que nos dieron un Hotel chulo (esta aerolínea era Lufthansa). Mientras esperaba los vuelos, conocí gente y hoy también.

El taxista que me ha llevado al aeropuerto por ejemplo. Su alemán era un poco extraño (aunque a saber como sueno yo) y tartamudeaba bastante, era ingenierio textil, vive en Frankfurt desde hace 18 años pero no le gusta porque los alemanes son muy racistas. Estaba preocupado por sus hijos, y por la educación que les daría, por eso se quiere ir a vivir a Inglaterra. Personalmente pienso que los ingleses son unos hijos de la gran Bretaña y que son tan racistas como aquí (Alemania), pero él me opinaba que no, que tenía conocidos viviendo allí y que las oportunidades laborales eran mejores. Curiosa casualidad que quería mudarse a Cambridge, como yo estuvé allí hace muchos años hablamos un poco de los lugares emblemáticos, Parker's Piece, Q-club (que parece que lo han cerrado) etc. Es un tio majo, la putada es que tiene una jornada de 10 horas por delante, ya me jodería.

Viajo con equipaje de mano, no llevo muchas cosas, ropa, cámara, cosillas prestadas del hotel, el portátil, cables varios y unos botecitos de miel que compré en Estocolmo. Normalmente nunca he tenido problemas en el control, pero hoy en el aeropuerto de Frankfurt me han hecho hasta descalzarme. Si lo piensas bien, es una pasada que te examinen tanto para montar en un avión, ¿cómo es que no lo hacen para barcos/trenes/buses internacionales? El tipo que me oscultó me dijo que los botecitos de miel no podían pasar, que eran mas de 100ml. Cómo estaba un poco cansado ya de tanta mierda en estos dias, me he puesto a discutir con el tipo (estos cabrones no se quedarán mi miel). Mi defensa fue que en el recipiente no ponía volumen por ningún sitio, ponía 130 gr, y que sin lugar a dudas el volumen era mucho menor (como todo el mundo sabe... ejem), que lo mejor sería que trajese un recipiente de 100ml de prueba y que lo comprobásemos in situ. Después de un poco de rifi-rafe al final el espíritu navideño y la perspectiva de discusión pudieron más, así que viajo con mi miel. No puedo evitar sentirme un poco estúpido por alegrarme de que finalmente me dejen llegar a mi destino, con muchísimo retraso y con las cosas que ya eran mías desde un principio. Lo peor es que no me dejaron cambiar el billete a Milán por uno a Madrid, así mañana tengo que cojer otro avión más (En principio iba a estar unos días en Milán, pero ahora ya sólo esta noche).

Escribo esto a punto de embarcar en un vuelo a Madrid. El vuelo que tenía a Milán se canceló (y van tres!). No obstante, lo que antes era imposible se convirtió en realidad. En cuestión de un minuto, la asistente me buscó un hueco en el vuelo a Madrid que minutos antes me habían dicho que era imposible cambiar y me dió mi billete. A ver si llego a casa de una vez, con la suerte que tengo igual se estrella el avión.

Obviamente he llegado sano y salvo, ya tocaba.

Gmail y vuelos cancelados

Curioso que cuando un usuario se conecta a Gmail en Alemania el logo que le aparece no es el de Gmail, sino otro distinto. Esto es debido a un contencioso que tuvo Google por el nombre (Gmail) en Alemania. Los de Google perdieron y tuvieron que renombrar su producto. Todo lo demás funciona exactamente igual. Digo yo que esto no le importa un pimiento a nadie, ni siquiera a mí, sin embargo siento la imperiosa necesidad de dejar constancia de un hecho tan irrelevante en la vida de todos. Supongo que me he vuelto un nerd. Qué pena.

Aprovecho también para comentar que he pasado los dos últimos días de aeropuerto en aeropuerto debido a repetidas cancelaciones de múltiples vuelos, y que escribo esto desde un hotel... adivinad de qué país...

Parece que el mal tiempo ha hecho que cientos de vuelos se cancelen, causando oleadas de pasajeros buscando nuevos vuelos, que a su vez también son cancelados. Personalmente me he encontrado con gente bastante curiosa.

En Estocolmo conocí a un señor llamado Daniele, que resultó ser un conocido reportero de Lugano. Su vuelo (y el mio) se canceló y se quedó en Estocolmo a pasar la noche. No en vano tuvo que comprar varios billetes más (3800 coronas = 380 Euros cada uno) ya que Easyjet, en plenas navidades, no garantiza otro vuelo uno o dos días después. Como tampoco daba hotel a nadie, solo un taxi para llevarte a donde sea, vamos una mierda de compañía. Al menos Daniele me dio su número de teléfono y ya tengo alguien a quien preguntar por información si algún día voy a Lugano, hay que ser positivos no?

También conocí a una chica llamada Tina, que viajaba con su perro a Ljubljana, estaba en Estocolmo desde 2003 ya que su marido se mudó allí por trabajo. Tenía un perrito muy mono que intentaba meter el hocico por dentro de la pernera del pantalón para olisquear. Me temo que perdí la pista a Tina una vez que llegamos a Frankfurt (11 horas después de haber salido de casa), ya que mi vuelo se canceló y el suyo no. La pasé dos pelis bastante buenas, "Mary and Max" y "State of Play" para que no se aburriese mientras esperaba su siguiente vuelo.

En Frankfurt he conocido a una chica de Beiging que quería ir a Berlín pero que había tenido repetidos vuelos cancelados. Su novio era polaco y habían decidido reservar un hotel en Berlín para luego visitar a la familia de él en su casa en Polonia. No recuerdo donde era la casa, pero se que estaba muy al oeste y que además iban en coche. Me gustó hablar con ella porque había pasado 8 años en Inglaterra y tenía un acento muy agradable.

También en Frankfurt conocí a una pareja que volaba a Zurich, él era Sueco de origen, ella rusa. El acento de ella era muy cerrado y el de él era el típico acento suizo, no se explicarlo. Querían coger un tren que les llevaría a Suiza una vez llegasen a Frankfurt, por lo visto sólo se tardan dos horas, el mismo tiempo que de Estocolmo a Frankfurt en avión. El tren es por la mañana mientras tanto pasan la noche en el mismo hotel que yo, lo que pasa es que yo solo... mierda. Él trabajaba de consultant en una empresa y ella hablaba por los codos, el pobre no podía decir dos palabras sin que ella le interrumpiese...uh... pobre chaval la que le ha caído (al menos ella estaba buena). En fin, , espero que lleguen a casa de una vez.

Estos son unos pocos ejemplos de la gente que te encuentras cuando vuelas, todos tenemos nuestras vidas y nuestras familias que queremos ver. Puto tiempo, a ver si llego a algún sitio hoy, porque no quiero conocer a nadie más.

I am really wondering why some people from Pakistan/India smell so much, not all of them (women don't) but most of the men here do. For instance, right now I have a guy next to me in a closed room, he's been here for like 30 seconds, and now the place literally stinks. I cannot think about anything apart from his smell.

Now I have to choose whether to open the window and freeze, ask him to leave or leave myself. Out of politeness I will have to do the last thing, but that will keep me wondering the same thing, why does he smell so much?

Is it the food or is it that he doesn't shower?

Shit, I would ask him but how do I point it out without being impolite or being called racist?
